Handbags for Sexy Tough Girls

Turning recycled truck tarpaulins into stylish handbags? Seems inconceivable–until you check out some of the styles designed by Brazilian based Yellow Port. Durable cloths that once graced the floors of 18-wheelers are molded into an array of accessories: men and women’s shoes, clothing and accessories. Many of the products are heavy on function but light on style (the clothing line for example, harkens back to Banana Republic’s safari style days). There are however, some standouts:
Sharelle bag, made of recycled Tarpalin, Leather & Metal is surprisingly feminine.
The Annabelle hobo bag offers a classic and casual look. Sophisticated street style.

Myste, a clutch style tote, is perfect for tough girls with a soft side.

Yellow Port also supports several philanthropic groups in Brazil including the Ecological Aware Project, and groups supporting rural communities.

Where to find Yellow Port:
Australia, Brazil2You
Canada, Ejust
Hungary, Betty Shoes
Sweden, BrasilDesign

Fabulous Grocery Gear

“Paper or plastic?” That’s the proverbial question of our generation. I’ve run mental circles around it and have made attempts to bring-my-own-bag without much success. Perhaps it’s because it’s a “logo-ed” Whole Foods bag and I feel self-conscious taking it to Trader Joe’s. Or maybe because it’s a sturdier, unattractive plastic bag I have to remember to take out of the house with me.

Happily, some solutions for style-conscious eco-shoppers are now at hand:

Dottie, Lucy and Wilma shopping bags by b. happybags, $20
With over 15 designs in all, these upholstery-grade cotton bags are machine-washable, and sturdy enough to carry a load of bricks. A feel-good, do-good motivator for those lazy Sunday grocery trips. Made in the U.S.A.

Reusable Shopping Bags by Envirosax, $5.95 , via Haute*Nature

Each bag allegedly holds the equivalent of two supermarket bags worth of goods, and can be rolled away into a storage pouch when not in use.

Australia-based Envirosax uses solar hot water and veggie gardens, and participate in the promotion of teaching sustainability in schools.

Available online through Envirosax. Choose from the Floral Series of tropic-inspired prints, or from the Graphic Series to suit those with retro modern tastes.

Going Green for the Roots Jam

The webcast of the pre-Grammy, 4th annual the Roots Jam is up on G Living! See who came out to lend their eco-support towards promoting composting programs in L.A. schools. VIP giftbags filled with green goodies were given to 75 special celebs. Fab Green joined the press core which was far more friendly and gracious than I expected.

I got to pal around with uber green blogger, Siel aka Green LA Girl. Both of us are camera-shy, but Siel (on the right) pitched in to interview celebs for ecorazzi and proved herself a natural with a mike (girl, I told you so!).

Eco-style spottings were thin on the Green Carpet, so I put in an eco-fashion showing. Let’s break it down:

Alive tee by Under the Canopy in mineral blue-grey (left). This is an unbelievably soft, organic cotton tee that fits like a second skin. The ruched-detail on the cap sleeves give a dressier look to a closet basic. $38 at Under the Canopy.

I wore a solid-colored version of the long-sleeved Conscious Tee. It fits me like a dream, and the scoop neck with ruching gives my tomboy-ish frame a more feminine look.

Underneath I wore Chakra Tank in Mudra Red. Like the other Under the Canopy tops this rib-knit tank fits perfectly. My only complaint is that the back side of the embroidery can be a bit rough and itchy.

The handbag: My Strawberry-colored Anarkali bag by Conserve. I bought this at Hip + Zen last year for an affordable $39, and get tons of compliments when I go out. When I tell people they’re made from recycled plastic bags, and support fairly-traded cooperatives in India they ask me where they can get one. Grab one at Hip and Zen or Overstock.
Thanks to Under the Canopy for sending me samples. Photos courtesy of fashion photographer Ram Gibson. Thanks for sharing Ram!

Greening the Grammy's

Thrill of the week: the producers of the annual pre-Grammy Roots Jam came a-calling this week for suggestions of eco-chic products for their VIP gift bags. Each year the producers pick a worthy cause to sponsor and this year it’s all about going green. How fabulous!

So it’s a Green Carpet tonight and Fabulously Green will be joining the rest of the press core! Woohoo! I can hardly contain myself. I’m not the pushy type, so I’m sure I’ll find myself stampeded to the ground by the seasoned and feisty papparazzi. If you don’t hear from me on Monday, call the hospitals!

Will any of the invited celebs wear green tonight? We’ll find out! If not, they will probably be going home with some fabulous eco-chic goodies picked out by yours truly.

The Fab Bag
The producers fell hard for this sleek, black Voltaic Messenger Bag. Considering they will be giving away iPod speakers and such tonight, the Voltaic’s built-in solar panels are perfect for charging up highly coveted gadgets like MP3 players, iPods and cell phones.

The Gems Inside
