Angelina Jolie Shows Off Her Green Side

Angelina Jolie created a buzz Sunday night when she wore a $26 vintage frock to the New York premiere of her new film “A Mighty Heart”. Jolie gushed on camera to Access Hollywood about the “G” fashion find–a black, crushed velvet gown bought on the cheap by a friend at Wasteland, the longstanding vintage mecca on L.A.’s famed Melrose Avenue. Anyone would agree that she looks like a million bucks–even if she hadn’t worn her $1000 Christian Louboutin heels.

Jolie’s televised confessional immediately sent style bloggers into a frenzy. Most were amazed and impressed that she dared to walk the Red Carpet in a Walmart-priced gown of unknown origin. But Jolie told Access Hollywood that she enjoys finding a vintage bargain now and again. Celebs gone thrifty and green–could this be the beginning of a Hollywood trend?

You can check out more pics of Angie wearing her hot, black number at Just Jared. California-based fashionistas looking to score a fabulously green bargain of your own may want to check out a Wasteland shop near you:

Ask Fab Green: L.A. Green Home Stores

Dear Fab Green,
I’m taking a trip to LA tomorrow; do you have any suggestions for eco-home stores or clothing stores to see while I am there? My idea is to create a store in my area that would infuse “green” ideas and products in a not-so-green ‘yet’ community.

Thanks, Janette Lareto

Welcome to L.A.! Thrilled to hear about your interest in launching a green home store. There are a few on-the-ground eco-home stores you can look into:

Viesso.com in Santa Monica on Colorado Blvd. – They design affordable, modern, custom green furniture. I visited the show room last week and met with Travis, the co-founder. Customers can choose a style, a coordinating fabric, and in 3-4 weeks the piece is made. I asked Travis where if they fabricate their pieces locally and he said yes. Upholstery options include sustainable fabrics from top companies like Maharam and Designtex.

Living Green in Culver City on Washington Blvd. – Living Green offers a broad range of green products including furniture, flooring, finishes, paints, garden supplies, etc. Some of my favorite products include Syndecrete, an eco-friendly concrete used to fabricate the sink in the photo (warning: not cheap), Yolo Colorcraft paint, and Kirei board furniture. They sell some of their products online as well.

Another local offering which may or may not be on-the-ground is green with glamour. Designer Deana Bracken founded gwg a month or two ago. The eco-chic shop focuses on a range of eco-glam accessories for the home, like this glass doylee bowl made in a studio using wind power. If you love Kelly Wearstler’s style, you’ll love green with glamour.

Others anyone?

Sunday's "It" Store: Revival Boutique

revival_boutique
Ok, I’m not a gal who fawns over a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes but if you are, here’s a way to take a greener turn the next time you indulge in a little retail therapy: Revival Boutique. This charming New York atelier brims with gently worn, of-the-moment, high-end designer shoes, bags, gowns, suits and accessories. New consignment items arrive daily and Revival ships worldwide. Opting for preloved pieces not only lightens the landfill load, but saves a little “green” for you too.

Wine Glass Chandelier | Stuart Haygarth

First I fell in love with British designer Stuart Haygarth’s eclectically modern Tide Chandelier. Here’s another creation that puts the idea of “design” in “disposable.”

DISPOSABLE CHANDELIER by Stuart Haygarth

Created from 416 disposable plastic wine glasses, this jewel of a chandelier gets its colorful glow from a pink fluorescent light source (that means energy savings for you and the planet). If pink’s not your thing you can custom select from a variety of other colors. A smaller version is available using 280 glasses. Handmade in an edition of 20.

WEDDINGS | Fabulously Green Engagement Rings

artdeco_engagementring
The film Blood Diamond may have been shut out at the Oscars this year, but it’s a winner in our eyes for bringing awareness to the dark side of of the diamond industry. Fortunately jewelry companies such as Brilliant Earth, Green Karat, and vintage jewelers like Isadora’s and Wanna Buy A Watch? offer gorgeous, conflict-free gems for your engagement or wedding. Yes you can be romantic and responsible–isn’t that what an ideal marriage should be?

TIMELESS & TRADITIONAL

platinum_princess
Princess Cut Garland Ring Set, Brilliant Earth
Perhaps the brilliant idea behind Brilliant Earth is their Create Your Own Ring option. You choose the diamond (caret, cut, and clarity) and setting to create a customized ring for your honey. Their diamonds are ethically mined in Canada.

My favorite vintage jewelry store is a well-known boutique on Melrose strip in L.A. called Wanna Buy a Watch? Yes, the store does indeed offer an amazing array of time pieces by Rolex, Movada and the like, but half of their store is actually devoted to vintage wedding and engagement rings ranging from the 20’s to the 50’s. The bands above are a sampling of what styles you can buy online, they carry beautiful earrings and necklaces too. Prices range from $400s to $10,000s.

IN LOVING COLOR
colored gemstone such as canary diamonds, blue or even pink sapphires (popular gem of choice in the early 20th century).
pink_engagementring
Pink Tourmaline Ring, Isadora’s

FASHION WEEK | Noir Fall 2007

Noir’s founding designer Peter Ingwersen describes its Fall 2007 Ready to Wear Collection as “a tension between something that is bohemian, and freethinking, with very, very strict lines around it, symbolized in the tailoring. It’s a tribute to the 1930’s in Berlin, … with an emphasis on the waist.”

The collection features some of its signature black ensembles but with softer, more feminine details than in previous seasons. The collection is punctuated with lighter pastel pinks and blues which is a fresh, subtle counterpoint to the moodier noir pieces. Noir’s luxury cashmeres, silks and organically luxe cottons (manufactured on its own organic farm in Uganda) take on beautiful movement when worn, as you can be see in Noir’s runway video, compliments of Style.com.

Overall, I’d say that many of the designs show more harmony than tension of elements–which may be less conceptual, but more wearable for the typical woman.
