FASHION | The Audacity to Vote

Can we judge the candidates by the clothing they wear? Sarah Palin’s suit on debate night was definitely an Armani glam slam, but if Googling the candidates’ names with “organic” or “sweatshop-free” clothing is any indication of where the candidates stand on the environment, Barack Obama would leap over McCain in a single bound. Companies like Clothing of the American Mind (COTAM), among hundreds of others are offering election-minded, pro-Obama fashion that is either organic, sweatshop-free, or both. From now until election day (November 4th folks!), all COTAM tees are 20% off in their online store, with free shipping and a free Obama love sticker for your car.

COTAM has been linking social responsibility with fashion since 2004 and has been seen on and modeled by celebrities like Amber Valleta (top), Natalie Portman (below), Diane Lane, Jamie lee Curtis and others.

SWEATSHOP-FREE TEES FOR MCCAIN? YOU BETCHA!

Although harder to find there are sweatshop-free pro-McCain and Palin tees out there for right-leaning greenies too at CafePress (shown right) or Skreened (shown left), who also prints ethically on American Apparel tees. More organic “McCain Palin” tees are available at JoinJohnMcCain. Nothing to speak of style-wise, but the environment doesn’t have to be a partisan issue.

CAN I WEAR MY OBAMA OR MCCAIN T-SHIRT TO THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY?

According to the Root, most states will allow you to wear your “Barack, Paper, Scissors” or “Citizen McCain” t-shirt — but it does depend on where you live:

An ominous e-mail has been causing quite a bit of confusion for voters recently. With an urgent warning to recipients, the e-mail claimsthat election officials have the right to turn away any voters wearing campaign paraphernalia to the polls. So what’s up? Can you rock that “Obama Mama” T-shirt to cast your vote on Nov. 4?

In most states, you’re in the clear. Wearing campaign paraphernalia—a button, a sticker and, of course, a T-shirt—in support of any candidate is seen as passive electioneering. Some states are more lenient. In Kentucky, Marylandand Florida, election officials most often make no fuss about voter attire. The only thing banned there is the display of excessive campaign garb (i.e. head-to-toe Obama gear) or outright solicitation. Wearing campaign paraphernalia and lingering in the polling station is also a no-no in those states.

Other states, such as Pennsylvania and New York, maintain laws on passive electioneering while remaining lax in enforcement. In New York, for example, refusing to comply with the request of election officials to remove an item is considered a misdemeanor, but arrests have rarely—if ever—been made.

Not everyone is as laid-back about the issue. In the District of Columbia, strict rules apply. Prior to entering a polling station in the District, everyone is required to remove or cover up any exposed campaign paraphernalia. No exceptions.”

Bottom line: Contact your State Board of Elections to be 100% sure. Or be fashion savvy and dress in layers.

HOT SHOP | EcoTobi Reviewed

doie-dress.jpgthreadsforthought-men2.jpg

Much has been abuzz about how “green is the new black” and yet, greening your personal style still ain’t easy. Over the next few weeks we’ll post some reviews of sites where you can find a range of designer brands offering “look good, feel good” fashion. You can also recommend us your favorite fab green shop here.

The Shop: EcoTobi

The Bottom Line: Nestled inside the Tobi website, EcoTobi is a micro world of high style for Sex and the City or Entourage types. Personal stylists are virtually on hand offers a boost to help your answer style questions.

The Skinny: Easy site navigation on both women’s and men’s sections. Excellent selection of organic beauty and skincare products, with a smaller but well-edited, established list of designer labels. At this posting, store leans more skincare than fashion for now, although we expect that will change.

We’d love to see fashion and skincare categorized separately to make shopping easier. Prices are high end, but occasional deals can be found in their sale section.

Brownie Points: Props to EcoTobi for pushing a skinny, zero carbon footprint in partnership with Carbon Fund, and for its use of packaging made from recycled materials, and soy ink printing.

Best bets for guys: A pretty deep selection of graphic tees. Organic, non-toxic denim options a plenty too, though price tags still run high.

Best bets for gals: Some cute dresses, tops at various prices.

Greening the Grammy's

Thrill of the week: the producers of the annual pre-Grammy Roots Jam came a-calling this week for suggestions of eco-chic products for their VIP gift bags. Each year the producers pick a worthy cause to sponsor and this year it’s all about going green. How fabulous!

So it’s a Green Carpet tonight and Fabulously Green will be joining the rest of the press core! Woohoo! I can hardly contain myself. I’m not the pushy type, so I’m sure I’ll find myself stampeded to the ground by the seasoned and feisty papparazzi. If you don’t hear from me on Monday, call the hospitals!

Back from Kauai

Confession: I ran off to Kauai for the last five days and was so rushed that I’m only writing my hiatus entry now. Landed safely, and am sifting through lots of e-mails from you fine folks. I’ll be posting again sometime tomorrow. Missed you guys!

In the meantime, if you happen to be Kauai-bound yourself, I thought I’d send along a few fab green tips:

My first meal of the trip began at the Blossoming Lotus Restaurant, a gourmet vegan restaurant in the heart of Kapa’a (where my family conveniently stayed). You don’t have to be a vegan to appreciate the dishes (I’m not and my mom is an avid meat lover). The spring rolls were heavenly, the chocolate mousse decadent, and the beet borcht soup was a delight. The entrees were gorgeously presented, though some relied too much on salt, some too sweet, but I loved my udon noodle dish. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name!

I fell in love with the daily sunshine markets — and picked out succulent pineapples, roma tomatoes, taro and warabi from the local farmers (who handed me a recipe to try–which I did). Too bad I couldn’t buy a dozen pineapples to take back–no amount of bribery will get you past those agricultural checks.

I wish I had time to hit the Salvation Army Thrift Shop and other consignment boutiques for vintage Hawaiian fabrics, shirts and dresses. My family was determined to see EVERYTHING (which left little time for shopping), so instead I snuck down my street (Kuhio Hwy) to Vicky’s Fabrics and bought several yards of vintage-inspired prints designed by local artists and unavailable anywhere else. Thrilled! Now I just have to break out the new sewing machine I bought and learn how to thread the needle…

Fashion Watch: Tonic T-Shirts

American Apparel may be the trendy trailblazer of sweatshop-free tees sweeping the U.S., but London-based Tonic T-Shirts takes eco-street fashion one, two, even three steps further. Tonic Tees are sweatshop-free and certified organic, not to mention it offers a line of irreverent, eyecatching graphic prints in addition to colorful unprinted blanks:

Tonic offers co-ed versions of its printed/embroidered tees and polos, but the collection for guys outshines the one for gals in my humble opinion.

Although this Nada Tee is pretty cute:

Need some validation? Tonic’s got it. Tonic T-shirts are SKAL-certified organic, bear the FAIRTRADE MARK and are locally made under International Labour Organization guidelines. Plus they donate 8% of net profits are reinvested back into the producer’s local community.

Prices range from £15-17 but there are some bargain basement deals to be had. Today is also the last day of the January sale. Tonic Tees are available through stockists across the UK, Europe, Australia and online.
