3Form: 100 Percent Fab

Here’s a quickie find for you today [it's beautiful and sunny here in Los Angeles and I scored some free tickets to the newly renovated Getty Villa! Then must trudge on with my thesis design project]. 3Form, my favorite company for anything translucent and hip and eco-friendly has done it again. Their new 100% Percent collection offers a gorgeous palette of four color mixes: orange slice, cut grass, night sky and snow melt.

The Fab Factor:
Can you believe these dappled delights are made from everyday shampoo and detergent bottles? What makes the colors so consistent: they break the bottles into bits and color separate them to get the perfect blends. 3Form’s 250 employees even bring their empty bottles to work to be shipped to the extrusion facility. The $20-per-square-foot resource is also available in a series of neutrals. Perfect for countertops, tables, chairs–the sky’s the limit. 100% recycled, 100% recyclable.

DESIGN INSPIRATION | Water Office

Apparently architect Tadao Ando is not the only one fascinated with using bottled water as a design material. Check out this design for the Tokyo-based office that also uses the idea of plastic bottle walls to create a different effect. Klein Dytham Architecture designed this space for the Danone Company whose main product lines include Evian and Volvic water–using their products as design material for the space.

The Concept:Translucent screens were made to create special zones for seating, and meetings in an otherwise open plan office. Empty Evian bottles were strung on wires stretching from floor to ceiling like beads on a string. The Fab Factor: Though it’s not clear if they used recycled bottles for this project, it’s got the makings of a bubbly green idea. Fab fun with recycling.More Plastic Bottles in Design and Architecture:

Funky Wall Coverage by Chiasso

If you’ve been reading Fabulously Green for awhile now you’ve noticed a preference for texture–be it wall finishes, rugs, clothing, etc. So when I saw these Flow 3D Wall Tiles by Chiasso I was definitely intrigued. Made from 100% pre- and post-consumer recycled paper, these tiles are shipped out unpainted so that owners can paint and mount them in any pattern they wish [all you need is double stick tape and a little imagination]. Which is perfect for apartment dwellers or folks who love to switch up their style (i.e. me).

I’ll admit that I’m probably more attracted to the V2 Tiles by Mio or the Inhabit Wall Slats featured in a previous entry You’re My Wonderwall. It’s just personal taste. But for those who prefer a little more funky and the opportunity to create your own masterpiece, these babies might just be up your alley.

Available for $40 (set of 12) at Chiasso

3form: Plastic Fantastic

The new 3form collection of patterns is even more stunning than their last–how it that possible? Our design firm Sander Architects went crazy over the Ginko panels last year–using them to create attention-getting wall dividers for the office. There’s a touch of 3form used in almost every project we design. The new patterns below are made with 3form’s trademarked Ecoresin which is made from 40% post-industrial material and are drop-dead gorgeous. Adorable doggies not included.

Mod Green Pod: Whimsical Wallpaper

Wallpaper that is hip and healthy–can it be? This bold baroque-inspired print by Mod Green Pod speaks even to my minimalist heart. The classic pattern in five of-the-moment colorways make them whimsically modern (think Kelly Wearstler ). Lucky for us their wallpapers are made of paper and printed using water-based inks. No vinyl and hence, no off-gassing. Just pure, clean sophisticated style. Fabrics in coordinating patterns and colorways are also available and are made from American-sourced organic cotton.

Grand Jubilee wallpaper is available for residential application only, unless you decide to get the papers fire-treated (which offsets the eco-friendly appeal). Co-owners Nancy and Lisa Mims launched Mod Green Pod to satisfy their own desire for swanky yet sustainable design. More exciting designs are sure to follow.

If You Want to Paint the Town

I’m a big advocate for chemical-free environments, and have been searching for paints that offer eco-friendly benefit and a beautiful color palette. Enter Yolo Colorhouse, an Oregon-based company whose concern for their own health inspired them to experiment with eco-friendly recipes (read their story). Their efforts resulted in the launch of a premium, zero-voc paint with a palette of 40 designer-friendly colors.

Designers and homeowners alike will appreciate the gorgeous colors without the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) inherent in standard paints that contribute to poor indoor air quality. Yolo paints are Green Seal Certified which automatically qualifies them for LEED points on commercial or residential projects. Which means for all of us, we can have our paint and breathe it too.

You're My Wonderwall

Texture is in — especially for walls. These dimensional wall tiles are ideal for homeowners and apartment dwellers alike who are looking to inject mod-style into a space–at an affordable price.

The V2 Wallpaper Tiles by Mio, available in three colors, add a bold playfulness to a space. They can be mounted temporarily with double-stick tape, or permanently with standard wallpaper adhesive. Cover entire wall spans or arrange a select few into your own custom art installation, Made with 100% recycled paper, these pieces are also made sustainably in Philadelphia. And wonderfully affordable starting at $28/dozen 12″x12″ tiles through Branch Home.

Embossed Wall Panels by Inhabit create a subtler texture for a space. Made with 100% bamboo-pulp paper, they come in an off-white color, and can be painted with water-based paints or patina. They can be mounted directly over existing walls, and are allegedly “goof proof” to install. Available through Inhabit for $84/10 18″x18″ panels. Seen at: Treehugger

DESIGN | Bold New Baths

A red hot bath? Why not. Finnish company Durat has designed clean-lined collections of tubs, sinks, basins. Available in over 40 colors, it’s likely you can find one to complement any urbanzen bathing retreat.

They have a variety of handsome, rectangular sinks to choose from, including both wall-mounted or base-mounted options. But it was the Torni Basin that won an Editor’s Award at this year’s ICFF show this year.

What impresses me most about Durat is the material. Made from approximately 50% recycled plastic content and 100% recyclable, Durat is a designer’s material. Architects and interior designers can create their own custom surfaces by specifying them in sheets, sinks, or by custom molding your own feature for commercial or residential application.

Durat’s commitment to uniting design and recycling earns accolades from FG.

Walls That Take a Sculptural Turn

Seattle-based modularArts has done it again. After introducing a stunning line of sculptural panels in 2004, we’ve been patiently waiting for the unveiling of new designs. Their latest, featured here is Bloom.

modularArts panels have graced the walls of Sony Design Center, Bloomingdales, CNN, Bellagio, Aveda and Burdine’s Macy’s.

What makes them Fabulous:
1. Made from 100% mineral composite, they’re nontoxic and contain no retardants or agents.
2. Awarded a 2004 Green Products Award by Organic Architect,
3. “Greened” their manufacturing process: waste water is recycled, and minimal plywood is used for packaging.
4. Are tactile, modern and simply beautiful.

For a fee, designers can even create your own proprietary pattern–providing unique sculptural art to a space.
