GUY STYLE | Preloved Jackets

olio-bobbyjacket.jpgolio-rexrex-sweater.jpg

These jackets by Canadian designer preloved are ideal for guys who like kickin’ it old skool. The line of urban style outerwear gets its edge from salvaged sweaters and crafted into one-of-a-kind pieces (you can actually see the process unfold on video from the homepage). Who knew that dumpster diving would look so totally righteous?

Most of preloved’s offerings are available in their on-the-ground stores in Canada, but I did happen to spot these coats online at Olio United. A few are currently on sale and perfect for spring.

LIFE.STYLED | Hotter than Paper or Plastic

i_am_not_a_plastic_bad.jpg

I confess that despite having a mad green streak, I’ve only been able to remember to “B.Y.O.B.” when my “B” is functional and pretty. Maybe you’ve got the same problem? If so I’ve created this groovy guide to fab shopping gear: for guys and gals, in lots of styles. Face it: it’s hotter than plastic and cooler for the planet.

Pangaya's Goodbye Sale

stewart_tank.jpg

A piece of sad news just arrived in the Fab Green inbox: Pangaya, one of the first eco-chic boutiques to open online is now closing its doors. Pangaya co-founder Sean Bartlett writes:

I am writing today to let you know that after almost four years in business, Pangaya will be shutting down. An early pioneer in online eco-chic retailing, the company has realized tremendous growth and is proud to have served our loyal customers with products that combined style with substance. Operations will continue to function as normal until current inventory is sold out. During this time, the price of every item of clothing in the store will be reduced significantly (up to 80%) and represents a tremendous value for those looking to add to their wardrobe.

Thanks to Pangaya for introducing me to styling eco-chic brands like Stewart+Brown and Undesigned. We wish Sean and the Pangaya team the best.

Hot Site: Chartreuse Chic for fashion "flips"

Bravo to Chartreuse Chic for doing what Fab Green has only dreamed about: showing style-conscious gals how to flip runway looks into chic “green” confections. Some of her flips are quite ingenious like the inspired, alternatives to Zac Posen, Prouenza Schouler, and Vera Wang seen below. There’s even an occasional style for the straight guy with a queer eye.

RUNWAY REDUX BY CHARTREUSE CHIC:

1. Instead of Vera Wang >> Why not this?

verawangflip.png

What makes it fabulous: the Kimber Dress by Perfectly Imperfect is fabricated (according to the designer’s website) from organic cotton, applies low impact manufacturing techniques and makes their apparel locally in Los Angeles. I may just give them a ring to verify this week and find out more. Will report back!

2. Instead of Prouenza Schouler >> Why not this?

prouenzaflip.png

What makes it fabulous: this Skyline Sweater, like other pieces by Armour Sans Anguish is a one-of-a-kind garment designed from recycled knits, fabrics and notions, and handmade locally by the designers themselves.

3. Instead of Zac Posen >> Why not this?

1374485784_9a6d19bbca_o.jpg

What Makes it Fabulous: A more frothy, layered piece from Armour Sans Anguish.made from refashioned fabrics and trims.

One thought: We wish Chartreuse Chic would offer explanation as to what makes these conversions green or ethical. Not all designers featured are green for the same reasons, and some flips fall more into ethical or indie fashion. Overall, we love the site. For more flips like these visit Chartreuse Chic.

Sunday's "It" Store: Zanisa

Zanisa is an online boutique well-stocked with green and gorgeous gifts for him, her, baby–even for your pet. Founder Susan Lawrence launched Zanisa as “a labor of love” and it shows. A beautifully drawn symbol legend helps shoppers understand the degree of “green” characteristics in each product. There’s a broad range of green style gifts to suit economical and extravagant budgets.

Who: Zanisa, a derivative Shona word meaning “to restore harmony and be in balance”
What: Online, one-stop source for high style, socially conscious gifts presented in drop-dead-gorgeous packages.
Best Bets:
Luxurious, handmade, organic soaps and spa kits
Restyled wallets, bags, totes
Organic, fair trade chocolates
Green gifts under $25

Extra: Catch the stories of artists/designers behind the goods in the Profiles section.

Know Before You Go: If you want to search products by green category (i.e. see what is “fair trade” or “recyclable”) you need to rollover the “Show” button to pop up the menu. Zanisa also stocks some “handmade only” items so not everything on the site is considered “green.”

FAB GREEN PICKS

Chocolate Wafers, Kathy Moskai, $15
Organic, fair trade chocolate from sustainably grown and harvested beans in the Ecuadoran rainforest. Topped with crushed espresso, pink peppercorns, or chipotle-roasted organic pumpkin seeds. A daring delight!

Fab Green Deal: THINK Chair

The Steelcase Think Chair is about as close to perfection as it gets in an office chair. From now until May 15, Fab Green readers can get a 10% discount.

Praised for its sleek design, cutting edge ergonomics, and environmentally conscious materials, the Think chair is so comfortable it just might give you the extra boost you need to get through the workday.

Awarded the 2006 Business Week Gold Industrial Design Excellence Award, Steelcase partnered with William McDonough’s design group MBDC to create one of the first “cradle-to-cradle” chairs in the business (meaning eco-friendly from birth to rebirth). It’s beautifully crafted from 44% recycled materials, 99% recyclable, and produced with no PVCs, lead, mercury and other known toxins. Designers and architects will be happy to know the Think Chair qualifies for LEED credits as well.

I “test-sat” the Think Chair last year on one of my visits to the Steelcase showroom, and dare I say my back was so happy I think it smiled. The chair conformed perfectly to my body and gave me firm yet forgiving support unparalleled in any other chair I’ve tried. Now that I’ve reached that age where I find myself regrettably complaining about lower back pain and overload of computer work, I recently came to the conclusion that it’s worth swapping my $30 Office Depot chair for something healthier. It’s not cheap, but pretty reasonable as far as high-tech chairs go.

If you want one for yourself or your business, e-mail the Steelcase Store and ask for the Fabulously Green 10% off Think coupon code. The chair lists regularly from $649-959 depending on custom features.

Thanks to Matt Lindstrom for contacting us with this offer.
