FASHION | Mod Green Pod Gets Sneaky

modgreenpod

The designer-owners of Mod Green Pod have made the leap from home decor to fashion. Owner Nancy Mims posted these beauties on her Facebook page recently: a sassy set of VANs Shoes made with Mod Green Pod’s 100% certified organic cotton prints.

According to Nancy, Vans came a-calling after seeing Mod Green Pod’s modernized Baroque prints in a random magazine clip somewhere:

They just spotted us in a mag or online when searching for organic cotton, which they knew they wanted to source for the collection. We made sure that our contract included sample shoes in our sizes (yes, those are my fuchsia legs!)

You’ll find these sneaks as part of the VANs Vault Line this spring.

THE FAB FACTOR
Mod Green Pod founders Nancy and Lisa Mims have been designing and offering certified organic cotton textiles for home since 2005. Their collection is home-grown in the U.S.:  the cotton is grown, woven and printed here. Only the non-toxic, pesticide-free dyes hail from abroad (Germany to be exact, where they are held to Global Organic Textile Standard aka GOTS).  In 2006 they added a vinyl-free, PVC-free wallpaper line (see our previous post).

Congratulations Nancy!

FASHION | Form & Fauna's Racy Shoes

formfaunaboot.png

For three years, I’ve patiently hunted for a pair of sexy, sustainable knee-high boots and it’s worth the wait. Form & Fauna’s sporty, sexy look speaks to my inner-tomboy. Sleek racing stripes are a signature in this freshman collection of flats, boots and pumps. Even though they hail from the Fall 2007 collection — they are perfectly wearable for spring. Skinny Bitches and compassionate fashionistas take note: Form & Fauna just may become the “It” label to wear.

Fabulousness Kicked Up a Notch

Inside and out they’re made sans leather, opting instead for high quality Italian-made synthetics. Heels are crafted from bamboo or renewable plywood, while the insoles and cushions are crafted from recycled yoga mats (can you say Ohm?).

formfunction23.png
Bay Bertea, the designer behind the Form & Fauna label, found the inspiration for her collection from her days as a yoga instructor. Imagine how comfy it must feel to step out (and onto) a yoga mat every day.

Form & Fauna shoes are good for your health. Fume-free with the help of biodegradable materials, and non-toxic, water-based glues and dyes. They’re made in the good, old, USA (how many things can you say that about these days).

Good karma and style? A great way to kick your fabulousness up a notch.

Check out the Form & Fauna website for stockists and stay tuned to Fabulously Green for sneak peeks into the Spring ‘08 Collection.

Sunday's "It" Store: Revival Boutique

revival_boutique
Ok, I’m not a gal who fawns over a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes but if you are, here’s a way to take a greener turn the next time you indulge in a little retail therapy: Revival Boutique. This charming New York atelier brims with gently worn, of-the-moment, high-end designer shoes, bags, gowns, suits and accessories. New consignment items arrive daily and Revival ships worldwide. Opting for preloved pieces not only lightens the landfill load, but saves a little “green” for you too.

Who: Revival Boutique
What: Source for of-the-moment, lightly worn designer duds
Where: 1374 Old Northern Boulevard
Old Village of Roslyn, NY
516 299 4556

Picks from the Online Catalog:

Christian Dior Halter Dress, Size 38/4, $895
Circa 2005 this sunny stunner fits right into this Spring’s “hello, Yellow” trend.

Richard Tyler Gown, $895
Classic silhouette, Grecian-inspired draping at the waist. Simply timeless.

Did You Know: Buying preloved pieces actually helps reduce energy use. Huh? It’s true. Buying new involves energy to manufacture a product (called “embodied energy”). Since a second hand piece has already been manufactured so you are actually making fashion at least 50% energy efficient by giving it second life.

DIY Style File: [re]Store those Shoes

If you’ve been warming up to the idea of greening your wardrobe on a budget, here are a few ways to “chic up” your shoe collection and unleash your inner designer.

TIRED TURNED TRENDY
Mary Kay Newcomb generously shares how to turn those tired into trendy ankle boots. Her Shoe-torial is packed with instructions, sources for design-it-yourself inspiration and photos. Worth a click and a bookmark.

CUTTING EDGE STYLE
This one involves playing with sharp objects so proceed with caution. All you need is an exacto knife and a stencil design to create your own inspired style. Inspiration and instructions found at meandering.

Moo Shoes: Vegan Chic

Vegan chic? Sounds like a misnomer but guess again. Enter NYC-based Moo Shoes, an online boutique that offers a broad range of cruelty-free, fashion-forward shoes, belts, clothing. I discovered them after a two-year search for stylin’ faux leather boots and fell in love instead with a few of their retro-inspired pumps and retro-inspired sneakers. Sisters Erica and Sara Kubersky founded the business in 2001, where their first on-the-ground boutique was ironically located in a former butcher shop! They’ve since moved to a spot in lower East Manhattan, but will ship products virtually anywhere by UPS. Lots available for guys and dolls alike at surpringly affordable prices.

Images from 'Well Fashioned: Eco Style in the UK' Show

At last there’s a way to see some of the pieces from the “Well Fashioned: Eco Style in the UK” Exhibition if you can’t afford that pricey plane ticket. Louise from the Craft Council has graciously e-mailed over some photos from the exhibit which included eco-style streetwear, wedding gowns, shoes, and recycled evening wear.

“Two rooms of fabulous fashion from the UK’s hottest young designers who make clothes that don’t cost the earth…”Well Fashioned” presents ecologically and ethically sound clothes and accessories from 20 pioneering fashion labels. Well Fashioned examines the various ways in which fashion designers approach ‘green’ fashion, from materials and processes to concepts and techniques. Some outfits use organic or alternative fabrics like hemp, bamboo, wild silk and ingeo. Other exhibitors consider the ecological value of synthetic fabrics and biodegradable and recycled plastics.”
