LIFE.STYLED | The Best Skincare Product You're Not Using

The best part of your beauty regimen is right in your kitchen

The best part of your health & beauty regimen may be hiding in your kitchen.

My friend Edmund, who works with eco-rocker Sheryl Crow and introduced me to chemical-free cleaning, lives by a simple rule:

if you can’t eat it, don’t use it — and for
Pete’s sake don’t ever put it on your skin.

Much has been written about the chemicals found in cosmetics that may contribute to rising statistics of breast cancer in young women, testicular cancer, infertility and learning disabilities (check out this article “The Chemistry of Beauty” by Sena Christian). Stats aside, it doesn’t take Madame Curie to question what the downsides might be of slathering ourselves with chemical compounds does it?

It’s time to replace and revive. One of the first natural products worth giving a try may be found right in your own kitchen: olive oil. Julia Ormond’s character washed her hair with it in the film the English Patient, and the Hellenic men of Sparta were said to have oiled themselves at the gymnasium to bring more visual definition to their bodies. So whether you’re male or female the beauty secrets go on…

OLIVE OIL: FIVE TO TRY

  • Makes for a great shave.
  • Moisturizes cuticles, legs, elbows and feet right after shaving, showering or waxing.
  • Controls frizz on humid days. Dab on the way you would any other hair laminating product.
  • Removes your make up. Just rub on, wipe off.
  • Exfoliates. Mix in with some sugar or sea salt — scrub and relax

BUYING TIPS

  • Consumer Reports recommends Goya Brand Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a solid all-purpose oil.
  • Stick with cold-pressed, extra virgin olive oils.
  • Choose oils stored in dark bottles or opaque containers since light can make oils turn rancid.
Thanks to Curbly for the tips. If you’re interested in other alternative uses for olive oil (25 in all) don’t miss their hotlist here. It’s a great one!

HOT SHOP | EcoTobi Reviewed

doie-dress.jpgthreadsforthought-men2.jpg

Much has been abuzz about how “green is the new black” and yet, greening your personal style still ain’t easy. Over the next few weeks we’ll post some reviews of sites where you can find a range of designer brands offering “look good, feel good” fashion. You can also recommend us your favorite fab green shop here.

The Shop: EcoTobi

The Bottom Line: Nestled inside the Tobi website, EcoTobi is a micro world of high style for Sex and the City or Entourage types. Personal stylists are virtually on hand offers a boost to help your answer style questions.

The Skinny: Easy site navigation on both women’s and men’s sections. Excellent selection of organic beauty and skincare products, with a smaller but well-edited, established list of designer labels. At this posting, store leans more skincare than fashion for now, although we expect that will change.

We’d love to see fashion and skincare categorized separately to make shopping easier. Prices are high end, but occasional deals can be found in their sale section.

Brownie Points: Props to EcoTobi for pushing a skinny, zero carbon footprint in partnership with Carbon Fund, and for its use of packaging made from recycled materials, and soy ink printing.

Best bets for guys: A pretty deep selection of graphic tees. Organic, non-toxic denim options a plenty too, though price tags still run high.

Best bets for gals: Some cute dresses, tops at various prices.

Sunday's "It" Store: Zanisa

Zanisa is an online boutique well-stocked with green and gorgeous gifts for him, her, baby–even for your pet. Founder Susan Lawrence launched Zanisa as “a labor of love” and it shows. A beautifully drawn symbol legend helps shoppers understand the degree of “green” characteristics in each product. There’s a broad range of green style gifts to suit economical and extravagant budgets.

Who: Zanisa, a derivative Shona word meaning “to restore harmony and be in balance”
What: Online, one-stop source for high style, socially conscious gifts presented in drop-dead-gorgeous packages.
Best Bets:
Luxurious, handmade, organic soaps and spa kits
Restyled wallets, bags, totes
Organic, fair trade chocolates
Green gifts under $25

Extra: Catch the stories of artists/designers behind the goods in the Profiles section.

Know Before You Go: If you want to search products by green category (i.e. see what is “fair trade” or “recyclable”) you need to rollover the “Show” button to pop up the menu. Zanisa also stocks some “handmade only” items so not everything on the site is considered “green.”

FAB GREEN PICKS

Bottlecap Bracelet by Laura Beamer, $159
Made from recycled Oopp juice bottle caps

Chocolate Wafers, Kathy Moskai, $15
Organic, fair trade chocolate from sustainably grown and harvested beans in the Ecuadoran rainforest. Topped with crushed espresso, pink peppercorns, or chipotle-roasted organic pumpkin seeds. A daring delight!

Guest Blog: Sephora's Green Turn

So what is a girl to do when, as she makes more “green” beauty choices seems to give her fewer options? Slink off to the local co-op to buy patchouli-smelling hemp shampoo and soy chapstick?

Fortunately Sephora now carries a great selection of earth friendly, vegan skincare choices that will help you feel as good on the inside as you look on the outside.

LUXURY ORGANIC SKINCARE
Stella McCartney’s EcoCert Certified CARE Skincare line means you can pamper yourself while respecting the environment. Fabulous benefits include: 100% of active ingredients are certified organic, and free of petrochemicals, silicones, chemical preservatives and genetically modified ingredients. Products are never tested on animals and fragrances come from 100% organic essential oils. CARE offers a selection of gentle cleansers, soothing elixirs or soft and luxurious moisturizers.

Another luxe brand to try is L’Occitaine. The Shea Travel Treasures Set offers a sampling of products and are definitely worth a try. L’Occitaine is known for their essential oils locally derived from the Provence region.

FRUITY + FLORAL SKINCARE
This line of skin products from certified organic Juice Beauty taps the goodness of lemon, grape and apple juices to make you pretty inside and the outside. Like this Green Apple Antioxidant Moisturizer ($43).

For the urbane girl who also loves the Earth, Phyto has long been recognized as a source of active plant botanicals (with rosemary, lemon and cypress oils) to make your hair soft, shiny and nourished. Naturally derived, cruelty-free formulas are packed in 100% recyclable containers.

If you have sensitive skin, Boscia is a must have. The line was created in Japan and is preservative-, fragrance-, and color-free.

Urbanites like myself appreciate the Skyn Iceland line, made to specifically treat stressed skin and replenish moisture, nutrients and oxygen. I was unable to independently verify their animal testing policy so until then, consumers may wish to keep that in mind and inquire at their retailers.

TEEN SKINCARE
For young girls starting a skincare plan try TESS (Teen Everyday Skincare System) at Sephora. Tess was “Created by two caring, creative mothers and their teenage daughters, TESS products are formulated with the purest, most natural fruit and botanical extracts, essential oils, and vitamins to cleanse, tone, moisturize, and protect teenage skin.”

PLANT A LITTLE LOVE
Lastly, to give your healthy glowing skin a pop of color, try Cargo’s Plant Love Botanical Lipstick, exclusively at Sephora. The tube is made of corn (biodegradable) and the outer carton is paper with flower seeds in the packaging itself. Plant the package, water it regularly and get some lovely flowers come spring!

Domino Takes a Fab Green Turn

One of my favorite style magazines Domino has gone fabulously green! Their March issue, out on newsstands today, showcases many green goodies to love in the world of design on their “green list”: furniture, accent pillows, fabrics, flooring, rugs, wallpaper, and toxic-free, color-rich paints. It is generously packed with things and ideas you need to go green and gorgeous.

Lifestyle goodies worth checking out include recommendations for an A-List organic vodka, fair trade coffee, pamper products for hair, skin and body, adventurous green retreats, and interviews and tips from such as model-turned actress Shalom Harlow, and Treehugger founder Graham Hill (who partnered with domino to unveil this eco-rich issue).

Domino also gives a thoughtful nod to cute-and-conscious fashion with a two-page spread of outfits dressed In Style style. The outfits in my humble opinion, could have been more edgy and exciting, it leans heavily on the current Victorian revival trend (three ruffled outfits?), but the designers they’ve showcased like Anna Cohen, Loomstate, Ciel, Noir, Agricult, and others are pretty spot on.

If there’s one misstep, it’s in that thorny area of advertising: tobacco. Granted, it’s a brand that’s natural and unprocessed, but does it belong in the eco world? Feel free to sound off.

All in all, if you’re looking to update your space with style and sustainability, run don’t walk to your nearest newsstand.

Green Gifting.4 For the Body and Soul

Here are a few great gifts for those on your list who deserve a little extra pampering this holiday season. Maybe you too! All the products are made of organic goodness, to help you feel pampered inside and out. Enjoy!

London Lemon Curd Scroll Soap handmade by You Stink. Consider Sandra a soap artiste. She’s incredibly passionate about soapmaking, and her limited edition soaps are all vegan and full of creamy, sensuous ingredients. Or try some of other indelible delights like spicy Pumpkin Cheesecake with Shea Butter, Apple Orchard, Peppermint Stick or Hot Apple Pie. Perfect for the fall/winter season.

Petula Bath Gift Set available at Zanisa
Skip the wrapping paper and opt for a beautifully keepsake gift box filled with spa goodies. Two long-lasting, triple milled, all natural bars of Savon d’Amande soap made with fresh goat’s milk, natural honey, wild almonds and oats to gently cleanse and replenish the skin. For longer relaxing soaks there is an organza bag filled with almond bath salts designed to detoxify and soften the skin. Yum!

For your favorite guy: Cedarwood Bamboo Soap at Zanisa.
Bamboo charcoal apparently helps stimulate blood flow. Good for sensitive skin with a subtle cedarwood scent. Arrives nestled in a bamboo soap dish tied with raffia — packaging that doubles as a present.

Sweet Heat Chipotle Truffles available at Organic Bouquet.
The Aztecs were the first to combine chili and chocolate for a sweet heat they believed bestowed them with godlike wisdom. Each box contains six handmade chipotle chili truffles for a smoky warm and sweet sensation and six black pepper truffles for an earthy-peppery taste treat. It’s a gift with a kick for the chocolate connoisseur who likes it hot—spicy hot that is.

Gerbera Daisies Bouquet from Organic Bouquet
The Gerbera Daisy is a plant that cares. Why? They actually help to improve indoor air quality naturally. And this arrangement is organically grown to boot. Brings color and cheer during the grey snowy season.
