NEWS | Fab Green Nominated for Top 10 Influential Design Bloggers Award

How exciting to be selected among this year’s contenders for Top 10 Most Influential Design Bloggers Award! Especially given that Fabulously Green was one of a handful of blogs chosen that exclusively covers green design. Thanks to Home Renovation and Wallpaper* Magazine for the nod!

Voting is taking place right now through October 15th. If you love Fabulously Green, please vote for us!

HOW TO VOTE (some people say it’s been tough to figure out)

  • Go to the Home Renovation nomination page. Scroll down to the third paragraph and click the link to be sent to the voting site.
  • Register your name and e-mail.
  • Type in the names of your favorite blogs (like Fabulously Green). The full list is in the post you linked to at the bottom. You can choose up to five.

You’ll be entered into a drawing to win a free one-year subscription to Wallpaper* Magazine. How cool is that?

Since 2006 I’ve been blogging about my dual obsessions for great design and the planet. It’s been a labor of love that has sometimes been tough to sustain amidst a packed work schedule. Over the last two years, I’ve met an incredible group of fellow designers, eco boutique owners and companies who are pioneers in the modern green design movement. Thanks to all of them for delivering style that serves the planet, and to you, Fabulously Green fans for reading and shopping green. Keep coming back!

A Makeover for Fab Green

Hi everyone. Lots of improvements are coming to Fabulously Green for you to enjoy. Adding new feature pages, a fresh new look and changing address.

Tweaks are still in the process over the next week so please be patient while we move things around. Your suggestions/feedback is welcome. Stay tuned!

DIY Style File | Beautifully Bound

I originally spotted this beautiful DIY idea in the May 2007 issue of Martha Stewart which makes for a great fabulously green gifting idea. A little rubber stamping goes a long way to give a second-hand book a first-rate look. No gift-wrapping required.

If you’re handy and artistically inclined, consider designing and carving your own stamps using the old-fashioned potato (fingerlings work nicely for small designs), or a white eraser.

For more detailed directions on designing your rubber stamps check out the Artful Crafter.

Ask Fab Green: Vegan Clothing

Hi Fab Green,

I found the “Fabulously Green” blog through a search at Google. It was a search result for vegan clothing, so it showed me all postings with the “tabs” vegan. I wanted to ask how sure you are that all these products are really vegan? Do you contact the manufacturers? I like your blog and it seems to be helpful. Thank you for answering my question.

xxx, Jasmin

Dear Jasmin,

Great question. Especially considering how profitable it can be for non-green companies to engage in greenwashing. We check our sources two ways: 1) Contact the company by e-mail or phone with questions regarding how they are assured that something is fair trade, organic, etc. We rely on certifications by recognized national or international organizations–or we won’t make those claims. 2) We read company information on the website and pass on claims that a company puts in writing.
How do we check specifically for vegan-quality items? 1) if the company states it uses vegetal-based dyes; 2) if the company states their products are made from faux leather or suede, or if their products are made from plant-based materials like cottons, bamboo, rubber etc.

The best confirmation would be to visit a manufacturing facility in person which isn’t feasible. We do the best we can, opting to trust the written claims of companies. If anyone has information to the contrary, we always welcome the corrections.

Fab Green Welcomes Suzi Smith

Suzi Smith, Guest Blogger
Beauty + Fashion + Vintage Style

Where were you born?

Beckley West Virginia. Yes, I am a coal miner’s (grand)daughter.

Describe your fashion style.

Um….Vintage Urbanite with a touch of Boho Chic\nso people may think I’m a little earthy and not wrapped up in myself. In regards to my closet, I quote Johnny Cash when looking into his own closet, “It’s dark in there.”. Seriously, I have my Summer Black and my Winter Black which I pack seasonally.

Are Ohioans as indecisive as the media makes them seem?

Fashion fetishes?
Hand bags, and coats. I can never have enough coats. Possibly shoes. Does eyes shadow count? That too. Oh, and hats. Lots of hats.

Your opinion on wearing fur? A recommended alternative?
NEVER EVER. I hate fur like you would not believe. There are lots of good synthetic alternatives now.

Your opinion on leather? A recommended alternative?
Um, ok, I wear leather. In fact I am loving this leather Rafe bag right now. BUT I justify that to myself by the fact that cows are not harvested just for their skin, like fur animals are for their coats. A good leather bag is an investment that will last a very long time. Of the 5 pair of boots I own, only one is real leather. The synthetic alternatives used these days are good though and I think technology will continue to improve in durability and style.

Favorite “green” piece in your wardrobe?
My bamboo socks! LOVE them! So soft and comfy. :)

Your favorite vintage shops?
There is a GREAT vintage shop here in Columbus [Ohio] called Rag-O-Rama. The Goodwill and VOA (Volunteers of America) are good too, mostly because we have the Limited stores headquartered here in Columbus. Their employees get a big discount so this trickles down to finding a lot of good used clothing if you look around.

Favorite vintage find?
EASY! My 1959 (approx) soft celadon green 100% virgin cashmere cardigan. It has little mother of pearl buttons and is fantastic condition. I found it at Goodwill and it cost me $3! A little research on the internet revealed the label was from a Scottish Cashmere company.

Secrets of vintage shopping?
Go early and keep an open mind. If you are going to find some thing in particular, you will have a hard time. The thrill of the hunt is the fun part. It also never hurts to be really friendly to the staff. They are a great asset and having a friend who will keep an eye out for you is fab.

Favorite designers?

\nDKNY. CHANEL. Calvin Klein. Betsy Johnson. Rafe Tortengo. Isaac Mizrahi. :)

Challenges you face as a midwestern girl going green?

Do you sew? Make any of your own clothes?
See, this is a funny question. About every 3 years or so I convince myself I can make all my own clothes. THEN I go buy beautiful fabric and what I end up with is a elastic waist A-line skirt and a lot of frustration. I throw up my hands and put my sewing machine away until the next time. It’s an ugly cycle.

Favorite green beauty products?
Hmm. I am addicted to Revlon Colorstay Eyeshadow quads. Revlon was one of the first companies to stop all testing on animals. I don’t know how green Revlon is beyond that, but I like their company policies and product. I am still searching for green-yet-effective skin care. Will let you all know what I find!

What do you do with your cast-off clothing?
Goodwill usually. Sometimes to friends who it looks better on. :)

Saving the whales in High School. Seriously, it was very important to me and it just developed from there. I tried being a vegetarian a few times, but could never commit, but I think that guilt drove me to learn more and the more you learn the more you change how you live day to day.

Delicious Diversion: FabGreen Gets Tagged

Oh the fun diversions bloggers will come up with. I’ve seen bloggers get “tagged” and confess to six little known facts about themselves, and lo and behold, FabGreen’s been tagged to fess up. Don’t put it against me! Hope you all still keep coming back because it would be a lonely place without you. Here goes:

Six Little Known Facts about FabGreen:
1. I used to be afraid of dogs. Now I’m hopelessly attached to them, the way some people get about babies. The cooing can be embarrassing.

2. I read everything I can find my hands on related to Elizabeth 1, Lady Jane Grey, Anne Boleyn, basically brillant women who ruled England at a time when people lost their heads for marrying the wrong person or sneezing on a monarch. Uh, like Jane and Anne for example!

3. When I was 12 I tried to sew a dress for myself that looked like a Laura Ingalls prairie-style gunne sax dress (my fashion sense was questionnable I know). I laid down on a leftover bolt of fabric (thanks mom), and with a marker traced the outline of my body. I cut two matching pieces, sewed the edge and turned it inside out. Thought I was such a genius for figuring out this pattern but of course, I didn’t fit into it.

4. I used to be allergic to many raw fruits and veggies. Then a macrobiotic eating yoga friend suggested I might be allergic to pesticides. Hmm…low and behold, an organic fruit/veggie eater was born. Although please don’t put me in the same room with any kind of melon. I’ll blow up like a balloon.

5. I got engaged on the Great Wall of China. My husband, who’s afraid of flying traveled halfway around the world to propose. The story used to be on the Wedding Channel website, but since we’re nearly six years married, we’ve been replaced by fresher-faced couples.

6. I’m loud and shy at the same time. Makes no sense I know, but what can I say, I’m a Gemini. With AB bloodtype. Which mean in Chinese culture, I’m a confused, artsy kook. Pretty spot on.

Ok, I have to tag some folks before Summer at BTC Elements beats me to it. Melissa at LA GreenLiving, Val and GreenMonkey at GLiving, Suzi at hellofagirl, Chris at doesitreallyhappen, and newly blogging cousins of mine Karen and Willy at ourspace.
