Angelina Jolie Shows Off Her Green Side

Angelina Jolie created a buzz Sunday night when she wore a $26 vintage frock to the New York premiere of her new film “A Mighty Heart”. Jolie gushed on camera to Access Hollywood about the “G” fashion find–a black, crushed velvet gown bought on the cheap by a friend at Wasteland, the longstanding vintage mecca on L.A.’s famed Melrose Avenue. Anyone would agree that she looks like a million bucks–even if she hadn’t worn her $1000 Christian Louboutin heels.

Jolie’s televised confessional immediately sent style bloggers into a frenzy. Most were amazed and impressed that she dared to walk the Red Carpet in a Walmart-priced gown of unknown origin. But Jolie told Access Hollywood that she enjoys finding a vintage bargain now and again. Celebs gone thrifty and green–could this be the beginning of a Hollywood trend?

You can check out more pics of Angie wearing her hot, black number at Just Jared. California-based fashionistas looking to score a fabulously green bargain of your own may want to check out a Wasteland shop near you:

Sunday's "It" Store: Revival Boutique

Ok, I’m not a gal who fawns over a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes but if you are, here’s a way to take a greener turn the next time you indulge in a little retail therapy: Revival Boutique. This charming New York atelier brims with gently worn, of-the-moment, high-end designer shoes, bags, gowns, suits and accessories. New consignment items arrive daily and Revival ships worldwide. Opting for preloved pieces not only lightens the landfill load, but saves a little “green” for you too.

Who: Revival Boutique
What: Source for of-the-moment, lightly worn designer duds
Where: 1374 Old Northern Boulevard
Old Village of Roslyn, NY

Picks from the Online Catalog:

Christian Dior Halter Dress, Size 38/4, $895
Circa 2005 this sunny stunner fits right into this Spring’s “hello, Yellow” trend.

Richard Tyler Gown, $895
Classic silhouette, Grecian-inspired draping at the waist. Simply timeless.

Did You Know: Buying preloved pieces actually helps reduce energy use. Huh? It’s true. Buying new involves energy to manufacture a product (called “embodied energy”). Since a second hand piece has already been manufactured so you are actually making fashion at least 50% energy efficient by giving it second life.

Designer to Watch: Use UK

Use UK is the brainchild of designer Nicola Prodromou, a “recycled interiors company” that transforms old textile sample books, fabric remnants, and recycled cardboard into elegant, high style lampshades, throw pillows, wall art — even bookmarks for bibliophiles (that’s me).

The studio’s raw materials are gathered from Nicola’s day job as a design technician, “I got the idea looking at an old sample book, thinking how beautiful the material was, and wouldn’t it be good if I could make something out of it…the samples are small so each cushion cover is made from four hand-sewn pieces of material.

The lampshades are digital prints on recycled cardboard. Over 20 styles in all: from modernized Baroque to clean stripes. Gorgeous color palettes. Some samples are currently on sale (£25-35) directly through Use UK. Read more about Use UK and other eco-chic British designers in this article in the Telegraph.

Jewelry and bags have followed as well. Use UK would probably be better named re:Use UK. Yes?

A Quick Shopping Tip on Craigslist

Taxes. Work deadlines. Press deadlines. You get the picture…I’ve been trapped under something heavy.

So as to not leave you empty-handed for too long, I’m passing on a tip I just discovered over the weekend. It will make your vintage, second-hand shopping much, much easier. And the reuse of pre-loved pieces is one of the best ways to express your personal style and go fabulously green. Are you ready?

Listpic.com – This is a real-time image browser of everything sold on Craigslist. Enter your location to whittle down the options. Choose your favored category like “furniture” and CLICK.

Drumroll please…

An instant feast of photos of sofas, chairs, sideboards, lamps each listed with a price and location. Mouse-over that Eames-period plywood chair and the actual text listing will pop up like a Pop Tart from a toaster.

This works everywhere…as an experiment I typed in “Israel” and in the Art category were some paintings.

You’ll never have to click through each little listing again. It’s like–magic.

Enjoy!

Sadly, powder-coated paints aren’t necessarily non-toxic and green, but you are rescuing classic furniture from the landfill. You might try asking them if they could use a low-VOC paint or if you’re crafty, how about experimenting with decoupage, or paint it yourself!
