WEDDINGS | Fabulously Green Engagement Rings

The film Blood Diamond may have been shut out at the Oscars this year, but it’s a winner in our eyes for bringing awareness to the dark side of of the diamond industry. Fortunately jewelry companies such as Brilliant Earth, Green Karat, and vintage jewelers like Isadora’s and Wanna Buy A Watch? offer gorgeous, conflict-free gems for your engagement or wedding. Yes you can be romantic and responsible–isn’t that what an ideal marriage should be?

TIMELESS & TRADITIONAL

Princess Cut Garland Ring Set, Brilliant Earth
Perhaps the brilliant idea behind Brilliant Earth is their Create Your Own Ring option. You choose the diamond (caret, cut, and clarity) and setting to create a customized ring for your honey. Their diamonds are ethically mined in Canada.

My favorite vintage jewelry store is a well-known boutique on Melrose strip in L.A. called Wanna Buy a Watch? Yes, the store does indeed offer an amazing array of time pieces by Rolex, Movada and the like, but half of their store is actually devoted to vintage wedding and engagement rings ranging from the 20’s to the 50’s. The bands above are a sampling of what styles you can buy online, they carry beautiful earrings and necklaces too. Prices range from $400s to $10,000s.

Pink Tourmaline Ring, Isadora’s
Circa 1920’s this ring is an Art Deco original set into a platinum band. I tried on a similar ring recently — and was surprised to see how complimentary the stone is set against your skin.

Walls and Wares to Die For: Lily Yung

My fetish for felt furnishings continues with a look at the sinewy, die cut furnishings and jewelry designed by Toronto-based mixed media artist Lily Yung. Made from industrial wool felt, the pieces are dyed and hand assembled by Lily into gorgeous webs for wall panels, pillows, rugs and runners.

Not one to waste good material, Lily takes the remaining die cuts (the cut outs) and uses textile techniques to create masterful pieces of jewelry:

Lily’s personal favorite? The blue Boa FB1:

“I think the blue boa is very successful. It is simple but dramatic on
the body and fulfills my goal to incorporate the closure mechanism in
the piece and it is also adjustable to fit different neck sized and
can be easily reconfigured to be a collar or a bracelet.”

The Fab Factor: Lily’s pieces are simply stunning and beautifully crafted. Wool felt as a material that is landfill-friendly and naturally fire-retardant (goodbye to chemically-based fire-proof treatments). We love that Lily sources her wool and cutting services locally (conserves fuel/transportation), and transforms otherwise wasteful leftovers into beautiful pieces.

FASHION | Industrial Flower Power

These pieces designed and made by Donna Piacenza and Jody Work give new meaning to “diamonds in the rough.” Their Industrial Bloom series of necklaces, bracelets and rings bring out the artistic potential of Hytrel shavings, a high-tech thermoplastic elastomer typically leftover from machining processes. These lyrical looking shavings are then transformed into wearable art.

I also love their JouJou Series of pendants made from deconstructed shampoo bottles. Splashes of color and text are redefined into one of a kind pieces, inset into aluminum and rubber. They make a bold, colorful statement. Considering that Studio 1A.M. makes each one of these treasures by hand (perhaps at one in the morning?), they are reasonably priced between $46-70 each.
