FASHION | Mod Green Pod Gets Sneaky

modgreenpod

The designer-owners of Mod Green Pod have made the leap from home decor to fashion. Owner Nancy Mims posted these beauties on her Facebook page recently: a sassy set of VANs Shoes made with Mod Green Pod’s 100% certified organic cotton prints.

According to Nancy, Vans came a-calling after seeing Mod Green Pod’s modernized Baroque prints in a random magazine clip somewhere:

They just spotted us in a mag or online when searching for organic cotton, which they knew they wanted to source for the collection. We made sure that our contract included sample shoes in our sizes (yes, those are my fuchsia legs!)

You’ll find these sneaks as part of the VANs Vault Line this spring.

THE FAB FACTOR
Mod Green Pod founders Nancy and Lisa Mims have been designing and offering certified organic cotton textiles for home since 2005. Their collection is home-grown in the U.S.:  the cotton is grown, woven and printed here. Only the non-toxic, pesticide-free dyes hail from abroad (Germany to be exact, where they are held to Global Organic Textile Standard aka GOTS).  In 2006 they added a vinyl-free, PVC-free wallpaper line (see our previous post).

Congratulations Nancy!

amenity-pillows.jpg

Sweet dreams are made of this: modern, botanically inspired linens that just might be healthy for you. One of my favorite decor designers Amenity Home has gone completely organic. Nice going!

They also have introduced their once-custom order Muir Bed as a regular offering. Mid-century inspired, it’s made from mostly reclaimed Douglas Fir, finished with non-VOC stain, and is made by local artisans here in Southern California.

You can view the entire line of organic bedding, wall art, and nursery linens at the Amenity Home website. To learn more about the benefits of organic cotton check out this great primer on organic cotton at Treehugger.

Fabulously Green Steals & Deals

For the fashion-minded and budget conscious, here are some summer sales to help green up your wardrobe without breaking the bank. First up is a sale at Beklina on season ready tops, jewelry and accessories. Our picks: a delicate graphic Lace Trim Cami by Stewart + Brown made of 100% pima cotton (shown left) and a crisp, summer weight Multi Stitch Trench made sans sweatshop by Myth and Ritual (shown right).

Allison of Under the Canopy wrote us to announce an online sale of their effortlessly elegant collection of women’s basics. Tops starts at $19.50–a true steal for beautifully made, organic cotton pieces that can be dressed up or down, or worn in layers. Under the Canopy is one of my personal favorite labels for form flattering, super comfortable tops. I practically live in them.

There’s also something for the G guy: Green Goody Thursday at BTC Elements at celebrates Dads with a 15% off sale on all men’s gear. Our favorites? The Billboard Messenger Bag, restyled from discarded New York City billboards so it’s not only hip but virtually indestructible. Side and mesh pockets hold water bottles, gym gear, notebooks. The Havana Shirt by Indigenous Designs is made of organic cotton offers a subtle hipster look.

Sample Sale | Fashion Made Fair [UK]

Calling London’s fashionable and socially conscious set: People Tree is holding annual Fashion Made Fair Sample Sale, a four-day fest of coveted fair trade fashion for guys and gals that starts today at 6pm.

What: High style, fair trade fashion samples and past season stock
Where: Studio 95, Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, East London
When: May 17-20

Some of our favorite labels will be available including Ciel, Enamore, People Tree, Terra Plana, and Tonic Tees. What’s more you can also surrender your unwanted clothes and accessories to Fashion Amnesty which will then be sorted for sale in the UK, with the projects going to sustainable overseas development projects.

The second Saturday in May, is designated as a day devoted to celebrating fair trade and this year the International Fair Trade Association’s main focus is on organisations who are working to help raise awarerness and help prick our consumer consciences into buying more fair trade goods.

“There are World Trade Fair events across the globe on Saturday, May 13 including gatherings in Bangladesh, Japan, Czechoslovakia and here in Blighty there’s a Fair Trade Footie match in Hull’s Pearson Park, an evening of entertainment in Oxford’s Radcliffe Square and Fairtrade at the Forge at Wetheringsett Manor, Suffolk.

Sunday's "It" Store: Zanisa

Zanisa is an online boutique well-stocked with green and gorgeous gifts for him, her, baby–even for your pet. Founder Susan Lawrence launched Zanisa as “a labor of love” and it shows. A beautifully drawn symbol legend helps shoppers understand the degree of “green” characteristics in each product. There’s a broad range of green style gifts to suit economical and extravagant budgets.

Who: Zanisa, a derivative Shona word meaning “to restore harmony and be in balance”
What: Online, one-stop source for high style, socially conscious gifts presented in drop-dead-gorgeous packages.
Best Bets:
Luxurious, handmade, organic soaps and spa kits
Restyled wallets, bags, totes
Organic, fair trade chocolates
Green gifts under $25

Extra: Catch the stories of artists/designers behind the goods in the Profiles section.

Know Before You Go: If you want to search products by green category (i.e. see what is “fair trade” or “recyclable”) you need to rollover the “Show” button to pop up the menu. Zanisa also stocks some “handmade only” items so not everything on the site is considered “green.”
