SECOND STYLE | Tea Tin Flower Vases

teatin-vases.jpg

Here’s a fabulous idea to celebrate the coming of spring: a constellation of petite vases courtesy of your favorite tea tin.

FABULOUS VARIATIONS:

Tea not your thing? There are probably other containers and bottles around your pad begging for rescue: that sexy, skinny bottle of olive oil you just finished up. Wine bottles with graphic labels, those vibrant cans of imported tomato sauce.

Ask Fab Green: Decorative Bowls

Hi Fab Green,
I’ve been looking for little baskets made of some kind of re-used plastic, have a weave-like look and available in lots of colors. Have you heard of anything like this? Please let me know where to find them if you have. Thanks, Liane

Dear Liane,

Thanks for writing! Recycled plastic is becoming a more popular material for a host of things from baskets and bowls to handbags. I personally lean towards contemporary style pieces by designers like Yaron Elyasi. Made from melted strings of plastic and recycled plastic, these Kacoon bowls are swirled in to existence–in the expressionist spirit of say, a Jackson Pollack.
I can’t say that melting plastic doesn’t pose its own environmental pollutants–any chemists out there know?

No two Kacoon bowls are the same. They are available in seven colors at an affordable price ($42). You can find the Kacoon here.

From Tabletop to Walls

Loyal FabGreen readers know what a huge fan I am of Sarah Cihat’s refashioned dishware. I’ve been on the hunt for a photo showing how incredible her dishes would look on a wall. Thanks to the L.A. gang at Apartment Therapy we’ve got one. Shown in the advanced copy of the Brocade Home catalog.

Thanks too to the AT gang for slinksn-ing Fab Green earlier this week!

Gifting Ideas: for the Modern Home

Welcome to the first in a series of five fabgreen gift guides for the holidays! These gift ideas are made with love for design and the planet which makes the act of giving truly special. Enjoy! And if you’ve got a great gift idea you want to share I’d love to hear from you.

Today’s Fab Five: Gifts for the folks who love their digs at home or the office. Modern, minimalist, eco-friendly style.

Art Clock by Andrzej Bialuski, $35USD
Bialuski is an independent designer and photographer based in Brooklyn who makes these felt clocks by hand (which means they’re happily biodegradable). The art clock arrives in its own gift box and is powered by one AA battery (for more green power, you can always opt for the rechargable kind). Great way to style up someone’s office or home. Five colors are available . Spotted at elsewares. Gift tip: think twice if your recipient is Chinese. Why? Some of us believe that giving a clock to someone means “your time is up.” My relatives do anyway.

Splash Umbrella Stand by Yasuhiro Asano, $75USD
Can Japanese design get any sleeker? These punchy umbrella stands will definitely make a splash at home or the office. Made of sustainable rubber and available in a bunch o’ colors. Love how diminuitive it is, and if you live in rain-deprived California like I do you can always use it as a vase. Or a pencil holder. Although for $75 you hopefully have some seriously fine pencils. Spotted at generate.

Hanging Vines Table Linens by Lotta Jansdotter, $34USD
I spotted these on sale at Vivaterra. I first fell in love with Lotta’s work five years ago at the National Stationery Show in New York and have been a fan since. Her Hanging Vines is one of her bestselling prints. Handprinted on undyed, natural linen.

Stone Cairns + Vases, $49-55USD for a pair
Another great gift item on sale at Vivaterra. A serene, minimalist accessory for a desk, window sill or tabletop. Cairns-shaped rock traditionally evoke safety, hope and friendship. The stone vases help bring a touch of the outdoors inside when filled with sprigs or buds from your back yard.

Two-Tone Tray by Molly Kinney, $35USD
These handmade bamboo trays are sleek, serene and sustainable. Found at Zanisa.

Sarah Cihat: Rockin' Dishware

We’re loyal fans of Sarah Cihat’s collection of rehabilitated dishware. Bold motifs, rich colors. Plates are sourced locally from her neighborhood Good Will or Salvation Army and given new life. In honor of this season’s rocker chic trend, we thought you’d get a kick out of some of these pieces that look as good on your wall as they do on your dining table.

Axel Rose playing Sweet Plate o’Mine…

The Fab Factor: Recycled and refashioned plates, we love their double duty function as dining accessory or a work of art. Made using non-toxic glazes and handcrafted by Sarah Cihat herself. Not to mention a positive example of rockers in rehab.

Sarah Cihat dishware is available in retail stores in the US, Canada and Japan. You can also e-mail her directly for custom orders. Ceramics range in price from $35-59 each.

What's New for Home at 2KH

I’ve been a virtual fan of Manhattan-based 2KH’s online boutique for some time but now they’ve relaunched with a dazzling array of chic newbies for home, baby, and body. Check out some of the eco-chic finds I found today (some are even wallet-friendly!).

Round Coconut Shell Lamp, $260.

Natural Lacquer Branch Serving Set in coral red. Made from tree-free resin, $84.

Circles of Bamboo Tray, $36.

Hotel Collection Organic Cotton Bedding, starting at $44.

The Fab Factor: the 2KH co-owners Mara Kloiber, Jim Kloiber, and Erin Hawker source products that are usually crafted from reclaimed or renewable materials. A portion of profits is donated to the NRDC and other environmental groups. Their 670 square foot jewel-box space was designed with eco-style in mind: featuring refurbished concrete, low V.O.C. paints, and custom-designed fixtures crafted from reclaimed and rapidly renewable woods, and eco-friendly resin.

Live in the Big Apple? Lucky you! You can visit the charming 2KH boutique in person:
2KH
458 West 17th Street
New York, NY 10011
866-458-1017

If you go, do tell!

Side Note: Catherine (aka Natural Girl) is going to tsk tsk me for blogging today instead of designing my thesis project. My rationalization: class got out early and I’m taking a little break! :)

Posh Paper Vases

plushpod_papervases_01

plushpod_papervases_02

The professed paperphile in me loves these sculptural Paper Vases by Team, Inc. Soothing, organic shapes are formed by fanning pages of bookbound, recycled, colored newspaper around a recycled aluminum vase. The results are soft, stunning and refreshingly modern. A fabulously eco-design find. Affordable too!

Available at Plushpod.
